🌙The Latest Sailor Moon Crystal, Manga, and Shopping News
Plus Naoko Takeuchi released some new artwork for the Tokyo Olympics!
Hello, Sailor Moon fans and welcome to my latest email newsletter recapping all of the biggest and latest Sailor Moon news.
Apologies for the large gap since the previous newsletter. Life took an unexpected turn with a family emergency (they’re fine now), an apartment flooding (still have several holes in a wall), one or two more lockdowns (hard to keep track), unexpected personal illness (think I’m okay now), and work obligations.
It’s definitely been a crazy month or so but I’m ready to get back into it and there’s quite a lot to talk about!
Sailor Moon Anime News
It’s actually been a big few months for Sailor Moon anime fans. Here’s what’s been happening.
Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 and 2 are now available to watch in multiple languages on Netflix in most regions outside of Japan. Make sure to rewatch it as many times as you can to encourage Netflix to support future Sailor Moon projects.
Sailor Moon Crystal Seasons 1 through 3 suddenly debuted on Netflix in some countries soon after Sailor Moon Eternal’s premiere. Sailor Moon Eternal is essentially Season 4 of Sailor Moon Crystal so this is great for those looking to watch all of the new anime on one platform. Note: Unfortunately, this version of Crystal doesn’t have the improved animation which is available on Hulu and the home digital and disc releases.
The official DVD and Blu-ray release of Sailor Moon Eternal is now out in Japan. You can expect my review of it very soon. If you want to add it to your collection, you can still grab it here.
Is there going to be a Sailor Moon Crystal Season 5? An anime series or film(s) based on the Stars Arc in the Sailor Moon manga hasn’t been confirmed yet but it is likely in my opinion. The theatrical release of Sailor Moon Eternal Part 2 in Japan ended with a message saying that Sailor Moon would return. It would also just be really crappy if the companies involved left fans hanging like this with an incomplete adaption.
Miss the 90s Sailor Moon anime songs? Corza has been doing a phenomenal job of uploading all of the songs from the first four seasons in high quality and with artist info to Twitter. Make sure to give them all a listen.
Speaking of the 90s dub, seven voice actors from the classic English version of Sailor Moon reunited for a special one-hour online panel which can be watched in full here. Highly recommended if you’re a 90s Sailor Moon fan.
Sailor Moon Manga News
The Sailor Moon manga (Japanese comic book) releases have gotten a bit crazy recently. It’s all a bit confusing so I’ll try break it down as easily as I can for you.
The release dates have shifted quite a bit but the last two volumes of the Sailor Moon Eternal Edition English language release, Codename Sailor V 1 and 2, are currently still set for release next month. Both can still be pre-ordered here and here.
The smaller paperback release of the Sailor Moon Eternal Edition manga, called the Naoko Takeuchi Collection, has been delayed by a lot. The first volume is now set for release in December. This release will be a good option for those who found the Eternal Edition too expensive and/or large.
The very new full-colour edition of the manga seems to have been delayed indefinitely. I’d almost forgotten about it until someone recently asked about it in the Facebook Group. The first two volumes came out in Japan in mid-2020 for digital e-readers like Amazon’s Kindle but very little has been heard about it or future volumes since. It’s likely that the global pandemic paused the progress on the production of this release. An English release is likely but it will most likely come out after the above Eternal Edition paperback/Naoko Takeuchi Collection release so that various versions of the manga aren’t competing with one another.
Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, recently produced some new artwork for the Tokyo Olympics. Sailor Moon was one of the official anime mascots for the 2020 Olympics and, while the original plans for the sporting event were clearly trimmed back due to the pandemic, artists behind the main chosen series still made some original imagery in their style featuring a variety of different sports. While the character in the below image isn’t one from Sailor Moon, the use of digital colouring is noteworthy and could be a hint at a more modern style in future Sailor Moon manga imagery.

In surprising news, the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Musical Nogizaka46 ver. 2019 musical is being streamed online from the 20th of August through to the 26th with English subtitles. Details here.
The next Sailor Moon musical is still set to debut in Tokyo next month on the 3rd of September. It’ll run until the 12th.
